Working with Battered Women Impacted by Substance Abuse
This model protocol is an overview of policy and practice related to safely serving survivors of domestic violence who are using and abusing controlled substances. It contains a recommended policy, a service approach (screening and identification, initial intervention and follow-up, information and referral), and recommended procedures. It outlines considerations for shelters, community programs, transitional housing programs, legal advocacy, and support groups. Additional considerations are listed for community collaborations, staff and volunteer training, and rural programs. It ends with a glossary of terms, and a list of resources for further study.
